Novel Corona Virus & Power Demand in JAPAN (as of Apr11)

The following describes what is known at the present time (Saturday, April 11) regarding the relationship between coronavirus infection control and electricity demand.

The graph compares daily power demand after March 1, 2020 (Sun) with that of 2019 (nationwide in Japan and TEPCO).

電力量 - graph

The following can be determined from the numerical values.

・ In Japan, the week of March 30 (Monday) and April 6 (Monday) is about 5% to 10% below the previous year’s level.

・ At TEPCO, the week of April 6 (Monday) was about 15% below the previous year (In the week of March 30 (Monday), the temperature was low).

* However, since the temperature was relatively low during the first and second weeks of April of the previous year, it is difficult to judge only from the comparison with previous year.

・ Looking at the movements in 2020, weekday power demand is gradually decreasing, and TEPCO has a strong tendency.

* However, it should be noted that power demand will gradually decrease as temperature rises.

・ Looking at the weekend, there was no significant drop on the weekend when the Governor of Tokyo requested that people should not go out especially in weekend (Wednesday, March 25) and when government declared state of emergency (Tuesday, April 7).

That’s all for now. This is a first time experience for the state, local government, industry, labor and the general public, and we should avoid making prejudice. We will continue to observe trends.
